La siguiente es una lista de eventos y noticias importantes que estaban ocurriendo localmente cuando llegué a grabar entrevistas en video para La Buena Vida. La cronología también incluye las fechas en las que visité cada ciudad así como detalles de producción, financiamiento y exposiciones hasta el 2008.

Chronology

The following is a list of important events and news that were taking place locally when I arrived to conduct video interviews for The Good Life. The chronology also includes the dates when I went to each city as well as production details, funding and exhibitions up to 2008.

2005

AUG/AUG: Entrevistas de video en México D.F., México
President Vicente Fox's popularity amongst the popular sector of society is very low during his last year in office as high rates of economic inflation are reported. Since June 19 until now, the EZLN (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional) declares a "red alert" in its territory. International observers are asked to leave and all work is suspended. El Presidente Vicente Fox se encuentra bastante desacreditado en los sectores populares de la población en su último año como mandatario, se reporta una gran inflación económica. Desde el 19 de junio el EZLN (Ejércio Zapatista de Liberación Nacional) declara "alerta roja" en todo su territorio. Se le pide a los observadores internacionales que se retiren y se suspenden trabajos en el área.

El Partido de los Trabajadores del presidente de izquierda Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva es acusado de comprar votos en el congreso y de crear fondo para usos ilícitos. El presidente Néstor Kirchner planifica pagar la deuda de U$S 9.810 milliones la el FMI con la intención de adquirir más autonomía e independencia de esa organización, cuyas presiones han afectado la economía, la cual se recupera de la grave crisis del 2001. President Néstor Kirchner announces that his administration plans to pay off the country's debt of U$S 9.810 million to the IMF in an attempt to achieve more autonomy and independence from that organization, whose pressures have had an effect on the economy, which is recovering from a massive crisis in 2001.

Colombia se encuentrá en medio de arduas negociaciones con los Estados Unidos para firmar el Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC). Los norte americanos se encuentran dividos en el congreso, los demócratas consideran que no hay condiciones de respeto de derechos humanos y seguridad para grupos sindicales y por lo tanto han frenado la firma. Colombia is in the midst of difficult negotiations with The United States to sign the Free Trade Pact (FTP). The American congress is divided, democrats don’t consider that Colombia doesn’t have the necessary guarantees to respect human rights and offer security to union members. They have blocked the pact (to date). Some of Colombia’s society is also skeptical of the pact and denounces it as yet another form of economic intervention.

NOV-DIC/ NOV-DEC: Entrevistas de video en Santiago, Chile
El 10 de diciembre murió el dictador Chileno Augusto Pinochet quién rigió con mano dura a Chile entre 1973 y 1990 después de maquinar un golpe en el que murió el presidente socialista Salvador Allende. Pinochet encabezó una dictadura que eliminó y reprimió a miles de opositores. La justicia chilena estaba en proceso de encausar al general por algunos de los crímenes cometidos por el Gobierno militar que dirigió. Video interviews in Santiago, Chile
Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet died on December 10th. He governed from 1973 until 1990 after staging a military coup against socialist president Salvador Allende, who died during the armed attack to the presidential palace. Pinochet headed a dictatorship that eliminated and repressed several thousands of its opponents. En el 2006 Guatemala celebra dos aniversarios: el vigésimo aniversario del proceso de democratización y el décimo aniversario de la firma de los acuerdos de paz el 29 de diciembre. Ese año se caracterizó por un temprano inicio de la campaña electoral para las elecciones que tendrán lugar en septiembre del 2007. In 2006 Guatemala celebrates two anniversaries: the 20th anniversary of the democratic process, and the 10th anniversary of the signature of the peace accords on December 29. That year saw the early start of the electoral campaign for the elections that would take place in September 2007. San Salvador faces increases in urban crime rates due to a recurrent crisis with street gangs composed of former Salvadorean immigrants to the U.S. that have returned to establish criminal cells in their home country. El presidente Manuel Zelaya visitó Washington en el 2006 con dos pedidos para el presidente Bush: el convertir la base aérea de Palmerola en un terminal comercial de cargo y el traer soldados de las fuerzas especiales estadounidenses a la región de Mosquitía en el este de Honduras para ayudar a combatir el tráfico de drogas en el caribe. Varios medios de comunicación reportaron que una base sería construída en Mosquitía con la ayuda de Washington para tener alguna forma de presencia militar en el area. President Manuel Zelaya visited Washington in 2006 with two security-related requests for President Bush: to convert the Palmerola airbase into a commercial air cargo terminal and to deploy U.S. Special Forces along the Mosquitia region in eastern Honduras to help combat drug trafficking along the Caribbean coast. Numerous media reports indicated that a military facility would be built in the Mosquitía with Washington aid that would, most likely, house some form of a U.S. military presence. El líder Sandinista Daniel Ortega vuelve al poder en Nicaragua después de ganar las elecciones nacional es en Noviembre del 2006. Ortega asumió el poder por 10 años en 1979 después del triunfo de la Revolucion Nicaragüense en 1979. La primera parte de su gobierno presenció una brutal guerra interna patrocinada por los Estados Unidos con la intención de bajarlo del poder. El gobierno de Ortega fue cuestionado por sus políticas inconsistentes y su hambre de poder. El país está ahora expectante acerca del tipo de gobierno que desarrollará. Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega returns to power in Nicaragua after winning the national election in November 2006. Ortega lead the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1979 and governed for 10 years, half of which would stage a brutal internal war supported by the U.S. Ortega's rule however was highly questioned for its inconsistent policies and his hunger for power. The country is now expectant to see whether the kind of policies Mr. Ortega will develop.

2007

ENE/JAN: Entrevistas de video en Ciudad de Panamá
En el 2006 Panamá aprovó una expansión del Canal de Panamá de 5 billones de dolares, la cual promete generar nuevos empleos e incrementar el tráfico de visitantes. El proyecto se inició en el 2007 y se terminará en el 2014. Panamá es publicitada internacionalmente como un destino de retiro para extranjeros. El mercado de finca raíz ve un boom de inversión extranjera, se construye una Trump Tower. Video interviews in Panama City, Panama
In late 2006 Panamá approves a 5 billion dollars expansion to the Panamá Canal, which promises new jobs and a rise in visitor traffic. The project began in 2007 this year and is scheduled to be finished in 2014. Panamá is being advertised internationally as a retirement destination for foreigners. The real state market sees a boom in foreign investment; a Trump Tower is in construction.

El gobierno colombiano realiza una operación militar en territorio ecuatoriano para dar de baja al segundo hombre de las FARC, Raúl Reyes. Ecuador denuncia el hecho como una violacíon de su soberanía. El gobierno de Venezuela, liderado por el presidente Hugo Chávez, respalda a Rafael Correa de Ecuador en su decisión de suspender relaciones diplomáticas con Colombia, retiran sus respectivos embajadores en Bogotá y llevan tropas a las respectivas fronteras con Colombia. Durante el mes de marzo se vive la crisis regional más importante de la historia reciente que se solucionó gracias a la mediación de la OEA. Video interviews in Caracas, Venezuela
The Colombian government organized a military operation in Ecuadorian territory to capture (and kill) the FARC's second most important man, Raúl Reyes. Ecuador denounces the fact as a violation of its sovereignty. The Venezuelan government, lead by president Hugo Chávez backs Ecuador in his decision to suspend diplomatic ties with Colombia, remove their respective ambassadors from Bogotá and place military troops in the border with Colombia. During March 2008 the region lived the most important crisis of recent history, which was solved thanks to the OEA's mediation.

AGO/AUG: Entrevistas de video en La Paz, Bolivia
El Presidente Evo Morales llama a un referendo revocatorio el 10 de Agosto para preguntarle a la población si apoya las políticas de su gobierno, así como las de prefectos de varias provincias. El país está dividido entre aquellos que apoyan al presidente y la oposición que busca la autonomía regional. Los resultados del comicio ratificaron el mandato del presidente así como el de la mayoría de los prefectos. Video interviews in La Paz, Bolivia
President Evo Morales schedules a referendum on August 10th to inquire whether Bolivians agree or not with his government's policies as well as with those of the governors of several provinces. The country is deeply divided between government supporters and a strong opposition that demands regional autonomy. The results ratified the President as well as most of the governors.
